For Emo Girls
In the depths of Dutch winter, I curated an event series with my friend and artist Joya Mooi. Life was feeling as heavy as the clouds were and I thought why not do a gathering in celebration of sadness. Joya loved the idea and we named our event “For Emo Girls”.
For Emo Girls is a night with live music, poetry and more to give space for the blues. From anxiety, grief, rage — the winter has a way of exhuming the darkness inside.
“We live in a culture that privileges happiness and “good” feelings and tries like hell to avoid “bad” feelings. It’s no surprise we don’t know how to grieve our own losses nor hold space for the losses of others. Our culture is built on a bed of politeness and cordiality. We were never taught how to say what we feel or ask for what we need, so concerned are we with offending or burdening or revealing too much.”
